First, the two strands of the molecule, shown only as ladders without being wound into a double helix, separate from one another. Then the enzyme DNA polymerase, which for simplicity is not shown here, adds complementary nucleotides to the two individual template strands. The four different possible bases are shown here as colored rungs on the DNA ladders. Note that the green base always pairs with the blue base, and the yellow base always pairs with the red base. Similarly, when a real DNA molecule is replicated, adenine always pairs with thymine and guanine always pairs with cytosine. Also note that the two replicated DNA polymers shown here are exactly identical to one another, as in living cells.
